Privacy policy

The short version

This site does not ask you for your name, your email address, or any account. There is no login and no newsletter. The only personal data that reaches the site is what your browser sends automatically, plus whatever our advertising partners collect through cookies.

What is collected

• Server records. Our host records ordinary request data such as your IP address, the page asked for, the time, and your browser type. This is used to keep the site running and to spot abuse.
• Advertising data. Third party advertising partners may set cookies and read device identifiers. This is explained below.
• Email you send us. If you email us, we keep the message so we can reply. Nothing more is done with it.

We do not sell personal data. We do not build profiles of readers ourselves.

Cookies

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. This site sets no cookies of its own. Cookies you may still receive here come from our advertising partners.

Google and advertising

• Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve adverts based on your earlier visits to this and other websites.
• Google's use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve adverts to you based on your visits to this and other sites. You can turn personalised advertising off in Google Ads Settings.
• You can opt out of personalised advertising from many other vendors at aboutads.info.

Shopping links

Some pages contain links to shops, including the Amazon Associates programme. If you buy something after following one of those links, this site may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra. Those shops set their own cookies to track the referral, and their own privacy policies apply once you leave here.

A paid link never changes what is written on a page. Facts are not upgraded because a link next to them pays.

Your choices

• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site still works.
• Use the opt-out links above to stop personalised advertising.
• Email us to ask what we hold about you, or to ask us to delete an email you sent.

If you are in the EU, the UK, or California

You have rights over your personal data, including the right to see it, to correct it, to have it deleted, and to object to it being used for advertising. To use any of those rights, email [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, email us and it will be deleted.

Other sites

Every page here links out to its sources. Once you follow a link, you are on someone else's site and their privacy policy applies, not this one.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on this page rather than made quietly.
