GTA 6 vs GTA 5: what is actually known so far

A side by side look at GTA 5 history and confirmed GTA 6 facts, with a clear table showing what about GTA 6 is not announced yet.

The short answer

GTA 5 is a finished, eleven-year-old game with a full public history. GTA 6 is an unreleased game with a small set of facts confirmed by Rockstar. Comparing them fairly means being honest about which GTA 6 numbers simply do not exist yet.

Why this comparison is hard to do properly

Most “GTA 6 vs GTA 5” pages compare a game people have played for over a decade against a game nobody has played at all. That is not a fair comparison, and it is easy to fill the GTA 6 side with guesses dressed up as facts.

This page does not do that. Everything said about GTA 5 below is settled history. Everything said about GTA 6 comes from Rockstar’s own Newswire and official site. Where GTA 6 has no public answer, the table says so plainly instead of guessing.

GTA 5: the short history

Grand Theft Auto V released in September 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was set in Los Santos, a fictional stand in for Los Angeles, inside the wider fictional state of San Andreas. The story followed three playable leads, Michael, Franklin and Trevor, who could be switched between at almost any time.

Rockstar then brought GTA 5 forward across a long run of hardware. It came to PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, to PC in 2015, and later to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That slow, repeated re-release across nearly every generation of console since 2013 is part of why GTA 5 sold as many copies as it did. It is one of the best selling entertainment products ever made, across any medium.

GTA Online, the multiplayer mode built on top of GTA 5, launched a few weeks after the main game and kept being updated for over a decade. That long online life is a separate part of the GTA 5 story, and it matters when people ask what might happen with a GTA 6 online mode. That question gets its own page, because there is no confirmed answer to it yet.

GTA 6: what Rockstar has actually confirmed

GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City as its main city. The two lead characters are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar confirmed both of these facts on its official GTA VI site.

The release date is 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar confirmed that date on its own Newswire on 24 June 2026, the day before pre-orders opened. No PC version has been announced or dated.

The game has been delayed twice. The original target was autumn 2025. That moved to 26 May 2026, and then moved again to 19 November 2026, in an announcement made around 6 November 2025. Both delays were announced directly by Rockstar or Take-Two, not leaked.

The GTA 6 rows that say “not announced yet” are not gaps in this page. They are gaps in what Rockstar has said, and that is worth stating directly rather than filling in with a guess.

Setting: Los Santos versus Vice City

GTA 5’s Los Santos drew on Los Angeles and southern California. GTA 6 moves the series back toward Florida, with Vice City as its main city inside the larger state of Leonida. Rockstar’s official material also names several other Leonida destinations beyond the city itself, including Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. That is a wider confirmed set of named locations than Rockstar gave for GTA 5’s San Andreas at any single point before launch.

Characters: three leads versus two

GTA 5’s three character system, switching between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, was a headline feature at the time. GTA 6 drops that structure to two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has not said whether players will switch between them the same way GTA 5 allowed, or how that mechanic will work. That detail sits outside the confirmed facts list, so this page will not guess at it.

Platforms: a similar pattern, an unclear ending

GTA 5’s platform story ran for years, arriving on new hardware each time a new console generation showed up. GTA 6 is following a similar opening move, launching on the current console generation, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Where the pattern breaks down is PC. GTA 5 eventually reached PC. GTA 6 has no PC version confirmed, dated, or priced. It may follow the same path GTA 5 did. It may not. Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet, and treating “eventually” as a promise would be dishonest.

Price: a fixed number versus a changing one

GTA 5 launched at a normal retail price for 2013 and its price changed many times over the following decade, through sales, bundles, and re-releases on newer consoles. GTA 6 has a fixed launch price that Rockstar has already published. The standard edition is 79.99 USD and the ultimate edition is 99.99 USD. The ultimate edition adds exclusive vehicles, weapons, apparel and businesses, plus two extra side missions, on top of the standard game.

Pricing outside the United States also differs by region. In the United Kingdom, GTA 6 is priced at GBP 69.99 for the standard edition and GBP 89.99 for the ultimate edition. In Europe, the prices reported are EUR 79.99 and EUR 99.99. In Canada the reported prices are CAD 109.99 and CAD 139.99, and in Australia AUD 129.95 and AUD 159.95. These regional figures come from press reporting rather than Rockstar’s own Newswire, so they carry slightly lower confidence than the US dollar prices Rockstar published directly.

Pre-order bonuses: a new idea for the series

GTA 5 did not launch with the kind of structured pre-order bonus system GTA 6 has. Rockstar has confirmed that anyone who pre-orders GTA 6 before 20 November 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City pack for free, on either edition. That pack includes a 1955 Vapid Stanier sedan and a garage, access to Ocean Beach, outfits and hairstyles for both Jason and Lucia, and a themed weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders also come with one free month of GTA+, Rockstar’s subscription service.

None of this existed in the same form around GTA 5’s launch. It reflects how much the way publishers sell games has changed in the years between the two titles, more than it reflects anything about the games themselves.

Development gap: over a decade apart

GTA 5 released in September 2013. GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026. That gap is more than thirteen years, the longest wait between mainline Grand Theft Auto releases in the series’ history. Most of that gap was filled by GTA Online’s long run on top of GTA 5, which is likely one reason Rockstar kept supporting GTA 5 for as long as it did instead of moving straight to a new game.

A long gap between games is not unusual for Rockstar. It followed a similar pattern between GTA 4 in 2008 and GTA 5 in 2013, though that gap was shorter. What makes the GTA 5 to GTA 6 gap unusual is simply its length, driven partly by two public delays that pushed the original autumn 2025 target out to November 2026.

What this page will not do

It will not guess a map size for GTA 6. It will not guess whether GTA Online continues after GTA 6 launches. It will not guess a PC date. It will not compare mission counts, vehicle counts, or content volume between the two games, because GTA 6 has not released and nobody has played it.

How this page stays honest

Every GTA 6 fact above traces back to Rockstar’s own Newswire or its official GTA VI site, both linked below. Every GTA 5 fact is settled public history from over a decade of releases. If Rockstar confirms new GTA 6 details, this page updates and the date at the top moves with it.

Common questions

Is GTA 6 a sequel to GTA 5?
Yes, in the sense that it is the next mainline Grand Theft Auto game from Rockstar. It is not a direct story continuation. GTA 6 has its own setting, Leonida, and its own leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Will GTA 6 have three playable characters like GTA 5?
No. Rockstar has confirmed two lead characters for GTA 6, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. GTA 5 had three, Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC like GTA 5 did?
Not yet. Rockstar has only confirmed PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6 at launch. GTA 5 also launched on consoles first and reached PC later, but no PC version or date has been announced for GTA 6.
Which game is bigger, GTA 5 or GTA 6?
This is not known yet. Rockstar has not published a map size for GTA 6, so no honest comparison of world size can be made right now.
